Who we are

The Portuguese Association of Women’s Studies [APEM] is a non-profit, scientific association, which aims at supporting, promoting and fostering Women’s Studies / Gender Studies / Feminist Studies in all areas of knowledge.

APEM is a national association which aggregates a significant number of experts and researchers from different academic and scientific institutions.

It was created in 1991 and its Statutes were published in Diário da República on 20/06/1991 [III série].

Membership is open to all individuals and organisations which are involved in Women’s Studies.

  • Project CAPACITA (EMPOWERS)
    A partnership between the Portuguese Platform for the Women’s Rights (PpDM) and the Portuguese Association of Women’s Studies

    The project CAPACITA (EMPOWERS), promoted by the Portuguese Platform for the Women’s Rights (PpDM) in partnership with the Portuguese Association of Women’s Studies, runs since January 2014 to January 2016. Headquartered in the Center Maria Alzira Lemos, in Lisbon, it is funded by EEA Grants under the program Active Citizenship.

  • Project e-APEM – Network of Emergent Researchers since 2011

    The e-APEM – Network of Emergent Researchers – has as main objective the expansion of the scope of action of the Portuguese Association for Women's Studies, through the constitution of a network of researchers who recently started their activity and who work in women's, gender or feminist studies.
